Trick
The next morning
Like one dead, Trick slept in the shade of a sea grape bush, lying on his side where heâd crawled after his epic swim. He gradually became aware of light through his eyelids. And sounds. The sea lapping not far away, and breeze, and birdcalls, and an insect buzzing, but more than that too: girlsâ giggling, some splashing and delighted shrieking.
He opened his eyes and could see down the shore through low-bending tree branches. Not far away, several girls of different ages, in colorful bathing suits, were tossing a beach ball in the shallows and calling out to one another. They were having such fun. For a while, Trick watched for the pleasure of it, a smile on his cracked lips. He was alive! Life was good!
He tried to call out to the girls for help, but after the attempt, he realized that, with his parched throat, heâd barely made a sound. The effort, though, had aroused aches from all over his body. He groaned from deep inside, and that got the girlsâ attention.
In a cluster, the girls stepped across the sand to have a look at what lay in the tree shadow. When he moved a stiff arm, they scattered like sandpipers before a wave.
One, though, didnât flee far before coming backâa slim girl, with long arms and long legs, wearing sunglasses and a reflective silver one-piece. About eighteen, Trick mentally calculated her age. She seemed like a goddess to Trick when she came up to him, knelt, rested her hand on his shoulder, and took off her sunglasses to look in his eyes with wondering concern.
âBakkle de wata,â the goddess said over her shoulder.
One of the other girls slipped away and then swiftly returned with a bottle of water. While the Silver Goddess supported Trickâs head with her hand, he eagerly swallowed the worldâs sweetest water.
He soon was getting pleasantly woozy again. As his eyes opened and shut, the rest of the girls sat all around him. They had sad looks for his plight and spoke words of comfort. One told of an ambulance coming. Another had brought a beach towel to wrap around him and hung it on a branch until he should be ready for it. They and their goddess-leader poured water over him and wiped away the salt and sand from his skin. They were all beautiful and they were all Nikki.
